While traveling, find the best restaurants & hiking trails. While at home, find the best recipes
Many people fly in to Phoenix and look to visit Sedona for a day, as it is only a two hour drive. A day trip is possible (I’ve done it) but I would highly recommend to stay for at least one night. Between the hikes & restaurants, there is simply too much to do!
There are endless good things to say about this 2.4(+) mile hike. Unlike most of the other Sedona hikes, it has a ton of shade, it is family friendly, and it still manages to have amazing views. Before I scare off the hikers looking for more of an adventure – it has that option too. At the end of the trail you will see a “trail end” sign. Here is where the adventure begins for the thrill seekers. You can climb up the rocks and follow a trail to the left. The trail will go on and on and you will see several awesome views before turning around and following the same trail back. Bring a lunch to stop on a cliff to enjoy the views – you won’t regret it.
More Fay Trail Info: Your GPS will bring you right to the parking lot, which is directly across the street from the trailhead. If the parking lot is full, you are able to park on the street. You will hike down a maintained path of red Schnebly Hill sandstone for 1.2 miles and will see a trail end sign. Along the hike, here is also a trail to Fay Canyon Arch which forks off about .6 miles from the parking lot. This is a moderate hike and is definitely worth seeing. Lastly, you can find seasonal waterfalls if you continue the Fay Canyon Trail about a quarter mile up the north fork. This trail is dog friendly but they will need to be kept on a leash.
The famous Devils Bridge Trail is known for having the largest sandstone arch in Sedona. You can stand under the arch or even walk on top of it. The downside is, it’s over populated and there is often a line to walk on the arch. It is a 4.2 mile round trip and you will come across some spectacular views. It is not very difficult and you can even bring Fido.
Birthing Cave Trail is more of a hidden gem. It is a 2 mile moderate hike that leads to a cave with phenomenal views. You will need to find parking off the side of the road at Long Canyon Trailhead. A little over half a mile in, stay left at the fork and follow the less traveled trail. You will have to climb at the end, but boy are the views worth it! This trail is a must do and is also dog friendly.
Ready for a challenge? Wilson Mountain Trail is a difficult 11.5 mile hike, there and back. It takes you to the highest point of Sedona, giving you the most panoramic views in the area. This hike was named after Richard Wilson, who was killed by a grizzly in 1885 in Wilson Canyon.
Cathedral Rock is another very popular hike with some of the very best views. It is only 1.2 miles to the top and back but takes an average of two hours. It is a pretty much vertical hike that will requite both your hands and feet at times. If you dare, hike to the top later in the day to see a once in a lifetime sunset. You can bring your dog on this hike (they’re on all fours already anyways)!
